Carpet Buying Basics

Below are a number of observations and suggestions for buying flooring in general and carpet in particular.

One of the most important things to remember in buying flooring is that there are factory seconds and even factory thirds out there.  That is, carpet (or other flooring) that has manufacturing defects of one sort or another.  Like all things human, mistakes and accidents happen at carpet and flooring factories.  The manufacturers often offer these items to retailers at significant discounts and, on occassion, some retailers have sold these defective products to unsuspecting customers as first-quality, non-defective goods.  The down side for the customer is, of course, that the product is defective from the start and, moreover, these items come with no warranty at all from the manufacturer.  If you come across a really good deal that seems too good to be true, you might want to ask if the goods are first quality, and get an answer in writing.

Carpet and most sheet vinyl come in 12 foot width, with some carpet available in 15 foot widths.  The wider widths can help you avoid seams in some cases, but may leave you with more "waste" at the end of the job in others.

Almost all carpet retailers will only sell by the entire width of the roll, usually 12 feet.  I.e. if you need a 15 x 11 piece of carpet, you'll have to a buy a 15 x 12 and cut it to fit, leaving the extra 1 x 15 piece as waste.  Generally a few inches extra on each dimension will be required for custom cuts and doorways.

Do not neglect the pad
.  Buying a good or top grade carpet and putting it over poor or inferior padding will not only result in less comfort it will also make the carpet vulnerable to accelerated wear and tear and staining.  For most carpets, a good basic 5 or 6 pound pad will be fine.  Anything less may be so thin as to provide almost no cushioning at all.  The poundage of a carpet pad is supposed to tell you how much a square yard of that pad would weigh if it was placed on a scale; a higher weight generally denoting a better, longer-lasting pad.  Be aware too that some manufacturers and retailers sell their pad in "shaved" versions.  This means the pad may be only 7/16ths of an inch thick, but they will label it as a 1/2 inch shaved.  At the other end of the scale, many high-end pads not only provide greater cushion and more resilience, but also add spill barrier protection (so spilled liquids cannot soak into the pad to later wick back up and cause a stain to return or smell), anti-microbial properties, and increase the manufacturer's warranty original warranty by 5 years.  We believe The Carpet Store's pad offerings are second to none and are at one of the best prices going. Our standard installation includes free tack strip where needed and 6 pound 1/2 inch pad.

Generally, laminate and hardwood flooring should not be installed in areas like bathrooms and kitchens.  These areas have a high chance of regularly exposing the floor to moisture and moisture is the enemy of these flooring products.  They will swell, discolor, delaminate, and have other problems no ones wants to have to deal with.  Solid and engineered hardwood can be glued down or floated, but laminate can only be floated.  Floating means to lay the flooring over an underlayment that generally acts as a sound and moisture barrier, as well as having some minor cushioning benefit.  The flooring strips or sections are attached to one another, but it essentially floats above the floor on the underlayment.  This vapor barrier protects the floor from moisture from below (such as slab outgassing) and allows the material to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity, which is particularly important for laminates.
